Nirbhaya Case: Union Home Ministry Forwards Mercy Petition Of Convict To President R.N. Kovind; Recommends Rejection

New Delhi: Officials said that the Union Home Ministry on 17 January 2020 forwarded the mercy petition of an offender in the Nirbhaiya gang rape case to President Ram Nath Kovind, recommending his dismissal. A few days ago, Mukesh Singh, one of four convicted in the 2012 mass murder and murder case, filed a mercy petition. The official said, “The Home Ministry has forwarded the mercy petition of Mukesh Singh to the President. The Ministry has reversed the Lieutenant Governor’s proposal in Delhi.”

A day after Delhi LG recommended the Delhi government’s rejection, Mukesh’s mercy petition was sent to the Home Ministry on Thursday.

The four culprits – Mukesh Singh (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) Vinay Sharma (26) and Pawan Gupta (25) – were to be hanged at Tihar Jail on January 22 at 7am. A Delhi court had on January 7 issued his death warrant.
